Denham Court, a suburb in New South Wales, Australia, boasts a rich history closely intertwined with its namesake homestead. The area was named after a land grant given to Sir Richard Atkins in 1810. Atkins, a figure with a controversial reputation, named his property after his family home in Denham, England. Owing to debts, he soon transferred the property to Captain Richard Brooks, a significant figure in the area’s development.

Captain Brooks and his family played a pivotal role in the local community. They established a small school and were actively involved in social and religious activities. The Brooks family’s influence is evident in the construction of St Mary the Virgin church, built as a private chapel over the graves of Richard and Christiana Brooks. This chapel, completed by their daughter Christiana Blomfield, is believed to be the oldest private chapel still in use in Australia.

The suburb underwent various changes over time. In 1844, Denham Court became a parish, and the original rectory was constructed in 1846. The suburb’s name evolved, with a proposal in 1970 to name part of the area ‘Edmondson Park’, in honor of a local war hero. However, after some debate, the full title ‘Denham Court’ was officially approved in 1976.

Denham Court’s homestead, designed by architect John Verge, is a heritage-listed site. The original house, expanded by Captain Brooks, reflects the architectural style of its English namesake, built in 1670. The suburb is now known for its affluent nature, often referred to as ‘the south-western millionaires’ row’, with properties ranging significantly in value.
