Things You Didn't Know About Bankstown
Bankstown, a suburb in southwest Sydney, Australia, has a history that reflects the growth and development of the region. The area was originally inhabited by the Bediagal people, part of the Dharug language group. European exploration of the area began in the late 18th century, with notable figures such as Matthew Flinders and George Bass exploring the Georges River in 1795.
The district was named in 1797 by Governor Hunter in honor of the botanist Sir Joseph Banks. Bankstown remained largely rural until the late 19th century. The development of the Bankstown Railway Line, which began with the passing of the Marrickville to Burwood Road Railway Act in 1890 and extended through various stages, was a pivotal moment in the suburb’s growth. This development led to a significant increase in residential and suburban development, prompting a move of the commercial center from Irish Town (now Yagoona) to the vicinity of Bankstown railway station.
Bankstown was officially established as a municipality in 1895 following a petition by local residents. Over the years, the area experienced several instances of council dismissal due to various issues, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
Post World War II, Bankstown witnessed a dramatic increase in population, partly due to migration from Europe and later from Asia and the Middle East. The Bankstown Bunker, a Royal Australian Air Force operations facility used during World War II, is a notable historical site in the suburb.
Bankstown gained city status in 1980, a status proclaimed in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. However, in 2016, the City of Bankstown merged with the City of Canterbury to form the Canterbury-Bankstown Council, following a review of local government boundaries by the NSW Government.
