Things You Didn't Know About Auburn
Auburn, a suburb in Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has a rich and diverse history. The area was originally a significant place for the Aboriginal people, serving as a marketplace, a site for ritual battles, and ceremonies. The Wangal and Wategoro people, part of the Darug and Eora/Dharawal language groups, were the original inhabitants of the region. Notable Aboriginal figures such as Bennelong and Pemulwuy were associated with the Wangal clan.
European exploration in the Auburn area began with Captain John Hunter and Lieutenant William Bradley sailing up the Parramatta River in 1788, shortly after the arrival of the First Fleet. The suburb’s development as a settlement began in February 1793 under Governor Phillip, who endorsed the establishment of free-agricultural settlements. The first land grants in Auburn were given to settlers, including members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and the area was known as Liberty Plains.
Auburn experienced significant development in the late 19th century. The name ‘Auburn’ was inspired by Oliver Goldsmith’s poem ‘The Deserted Village’, and the township was officially surveyed and divided into allotments in the late 1870s. Industrial development flourished from the 1860s to the 1880s, with the establishment of businesses like Henry Vale & Co, which built locomotives, and Ritchie Brothers, which produced railway rolling stock and agricultural implements.
The Borough of Auburn was proclaimed in 1892, and the Auburn Town Hall was established in 1896. The suburb continued to grow, with significant industrial and residential development, including the establishment of the Auburn Brick, Tile & Pottery Company in 1905.
In the post-war period, Auburn became known for its multicultural community. The suburb is also known for its Auburn Botanic Gardens and the Gallipoli Mosque, a notable landmark completed in 2000.
The former Auburn City Council was established in 1892 and later merged with parts of Holroyd and Parramatta to form the Cumberland local government area in 2016.
