Campbelltown, once the tranquil domain of the Tharawal people, experienced a transformation with the arrival of European settlers. A unique event in 1788 saw the Tharawal encounter a herd of cattle, which they portrayed in the notable Bull Cave rock art. By 1795, Camden, as the British termed the region, was home to around 60 cattle.

The area’s vast grazing lands caught the attention of John Macarthur, leading to a series of land grants. As 1814’s drought beckoned the Gandangara people, tensions escalated, prompting Governor Macquarie to establish Campbell-Town in 1820.

Yet, a century later, in December 1920, the quietude of Campbelltown was pierced by spirited centenary celebrations. The Roarin’ Twenties brought unparalleled optimism to the town. The conclusion of the Great War saw thriving local businesses and a burgeoning housing market. With remarkable advancements like impending electricity and infrastructural upgrades, the community had much to celebrate. The festivities witnessed the involvement of pioneering families like the Warbys, Fitzpatricks, Kershlers, and Vardys.

However, the centenary fervor paid special homage to one individual: Governor Lachlan Macquarie. In 1820, Macquarie had founded Campbelltown, naming it in honor of his wife’s maiden name, Elizabeth Macarthur nee Campbell, of the influential Clan Campbell of Cawdor. His diary recalls the day he marked the town’s site, garnering applause and cheers from those present.

But by 1822, Macquarie’s influence was waning, owing to his contentious policies. While he envisioned Campbelltown’s grandeur, much of his dream lay unfulfilled. Upon the arrival of Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane, Campbelltown’s development was sidelined. By 1823, aside from the nascent St Peter’s Anglican Church, Campbelltown remained a humble settlement.

However, decades later, Macquarie’s vision found vindication as Campbelltown blossomed outside its official borders, eventually becoming the jubilant town that celebrated its centenary with unmatched zeal in 1920.
