Electrical Guide for Kitchen and Bathroom Renovations on the Sunshine Coast

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are among the most popular home improvement projects on the Sunshine Coast. Both rooms have specific electrical requirements that differ significantly from standard rooms - wet areas need additional safety measures, kitchens require dedicated circuits for heavy appliances, and both benefit enormously from well-planned lighting.

Getting the electrical design right during the planning phase saves money, avoids delays, and ensures your renovation meets all Australian electrical safety standards. Here is what you need to consider.

Kitchen Electrical Requirements

Modern kitchens are the most electrically demanding room in the house. An oven, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator may all need dedicated circuits. A standard kitchen renovation on the Sunshine Coast typically requires 4 to 6 dedicated circuits to handle these appliances safely.

Power point placement is critical in a kitchen. You need enough outlets to avoid overcrowding benchtops with power boards. We recommend a minimum of four double power points along the splashback area, plus dedicated outlets for the fridge, dishwasher, and any other fixed appliances.

Under-cabinet LED strip lighting, pendant lights over an island bench, and recessed downlights in the ceiling are standard features in modern Sunshine Coast kitchen renovations. Dimming capability on the main lighting allows you to shift from bright task lighting while cooking to ambient lighting while entertaining.

If your kitchen renovation includes a built-in coffee machine, zip tap (boiling water unit), or wine fridge, each of these typically requires its own dedicated power point behind the cabinetry. Plan these with your kitchen designer and electrician before the cabinetry is ordered.

Bathroom Electrical Safety

Bathrooms are classified as wet areas under Australian electrical standards, which means strict rules govern what can be installed and where. Power points must be positioned at least 600mm from the edge of a shower or bath. All bathroom circuits must be protected by a safety switch (RCD).

Exhaust fans are essential in Sunshine Coast bathrooms to manage humidity and prevent mould growth. We recommend inline exhaust fans ducted to the exterior for the quietest and most effective ventilation. Timer switches or humidity sensors ensure the fan runs long enough after a shower to clear moisture.

Heated towel rails, heated mirrors (to prevent fogging), and underfloor heating are popular additions in Sunshine Coast bathroom renovations. Each requires proper electrical planning during the design phase - they cannot simply be added after the tiling is done.

LED lighting in bathrooms should include bright task lighting around the mirror (ideally from the sides, not above, to reduce shadows) and softer ambient lighting for relaxing baths. A dimmer or separate circuit for night-time bathroom visits is a feature our clients appreciate.

Working with Your Builder and Renovation Timeline

Electrical rough-in (running cables inside walls before plasterboard) should happen early in the renovation timeline. Once walls are closed and tiles are laid, adding or moving cables becomes expensive and disruptive.

We work closely with Sunshine Coast builders, kitchen designers, and bathroom renovators to coordinate the electrical design and installation. Early involvement means fewer surprises, fewer variations, and a smoother renovation.
